A beautiful place. I cannot understand those who want to build the bridge. I agree with the ruling.

Peace Park in Hiroshima would also be a good place for a shopping mall and pachinko parlor.

This is not even a good joke. Respect Peace Park for what it stand for and leave it alone.

I thought this was typical Japanese thinking. "Lets destroy the country-side and put up concrete blocks!"

This place is a joke. Pretty soon the whole country will cemented over if citizens don't step up and tell the gov't to stop

I saw this on the NHK News last night. I for one am very happy that the locals took a stand on this, I hope that this sort of things spreads across Japan. There is already too much fugly concrete spread over everything here. There were two old farts who also gave a press conference stating that they will fight the decision. Their thinking is that this town should have all the modern conveniences of other towns in Japan. They should just pack up and move some place else.

Hiroshima officials say the project would help ease traffic jams, expand sewage lines and improve various other aspects of the lives of residents in the districts, according to the lawsuit.

Apparently the residents themselves don't agree. I hope the ruling will not be overturned in a higher court and that this sets a precedent for other residents elsewhere to learn from. It's not the bureaucrats and politicians that get to decide on every aspect of how our environment should look or be. It seems the only incentives to stimulate the economy are public works: more bridges, more roads, more concrete, more ugliness. Ease traffic jams? Hah. Leave your cars at home, use public transport and/or live with the inconvenience.

Japan won't be happy until it's like that whole planet which is a city from Star Wars. They should pour concrete over the whole island and be done with it.

I think people have a good image of Japan, but after you live here for a few years you know that Japan is concrete, pachinko and food that tastes of sugar or soy sauce. I wonder why the Japanese are so keen to destroy their country/culture?
