One thing is clear: Despite the deadly Takata accidents, airbags themselves do save lives

I don't see how that is clear. How can it be known a seat belt alone would not have done the trick?

Funny car,a seatbelt alone serves roughly the purpose of restraining your already dead body in the car, preventing it from flying outside. If used together with airbag, it serves to place the body in a position in which the airbag is designed to be most effective in order to save lives. Is it clear now?
