Death toll from March 11 disaster 15,853; 3,283 missing
TOKYO —
The National Police Agency said Friday that the death toll from last year’s March 11 disaster stands at 15,853 people, while 3,283 remain missing.
Prefectures with the highest death tolls were Miyagi with 9,512, Iwate with 4,670 and Fukushima where 1,605 people perished, the NPA said.
Meanwhile, the land ministry said that in the three hardest-hit prefectures, 128,700 buildings collapsed completely, 245,000 half-collapsed, while 678,900 buildings collapsed partly.

Does this count the ones that were washed away too? It isn't clear how they make the distinction or if in same category. If it is all collapsed then it is a terrifying number for waht is a relatively sparsely populated area.

The number is also high because there were many individual houses. Not sure that makes sense to count that way. I mean 30 buildings collapsed in the center of Kobe that might be like 3000 houses. Whatever, that's a huge scale disaster.
