Edo-era human, animal bones found at Tokyo construction site

Construction workers have discovered portions of a human skull and almost 300 pieces of animal bones at a construction site near Hamamatsucho train station in Tokyo.

The discovery was made around 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Besides the adult-sized human skull fragments, there were 292 jaw bones belonging to various animals, Yahoo News reported.

The bones discovered appear to be from the Edo era, experts said, adding that the site at which they were found was probably once used as a graveyard.

The site had been used as a parking lot for 17 years before being dug up to begin construction of a hotel in February of this year.

No fear of someone collecting pension funds on his/her behalf because no pension system in Edo era, i presume (!)

There are actually human remains almost everywhere you dig so it's not a surprise, but an interesting find nonetheless. It's also not uncommon to find animal and human remains mixed together (before anyone is convinced it's cannibalism) but, of course, they will have to consider all the possibilities...
