Japan's policies in this regard are backwards and archaic. Japan wants cheap labor, skilled labor and expat expertise but doesn't want to grant rights or care about the children who are born to these people and who are in every way Japanese first.

Japan needs to join the modern world and start having sensible policies for children born and raised here. Not to mention more rational immigration and refugee policies in general.

Come on...There are far more serious issues to be dealing with in this country. Most politicians here are apathetic bimbos. Give the parents a fine or suspended sentence (as they do with murderers) and get on with sorting out the country.

This IS not a great country to come to if you are going to have a shifty visa status.

i dont understand her parents.the parents have been working n i believe might have saved some money, you better take your kid to a civilized country to have her education.why struggling to live in this country where as there are countries out there you wont be called a gaijin

All the Justice Minister is going to say is, "Yoshi yoshi... we feel so sorry for what is happening, but it's out of our control. Shouganai ne!" All the while with a big smile on his face.

Poor kid. The parents did commit a crime, but the child should not suffer as a result. Keep the kid, and send off the parents, so long as the kid has a proper care giver.

    Very classic gaijin recipe:

    • illegal passports (this is called a crime in western countries)
    • reproduce yourself (iranian old style)
    • cry in front of news cameras
    • say you speak only japanese
    • ask to stay so you can go to school to become a great nurse to help japanese people

My point: I have friends from France, at home parents speak only in french with kids, from Italy parents speak only in italian with kids and those filipino are trying to tell us they speak only in japanese at home ? come on ! mommy is filipino, daddy is filipino and they will speak only in japanese at home ? no way.

Dogdog - I get sick of it too. Japan should really try to join in with civilization

I agree with you 100%, but what the parents did was and will always remain illegal in any civilized country

Permanet resident permission should be given to her. She was born in Japan and has been educated for a long time until today now. She can not speak other languages besides Japanese. Any foreigners who were born in Japan and educated here for many years should be eligible for permanet residence in Japan if they want.

They should really follow the fashion trend at the moment and just give the parents a suspended sentence so that the kid can stay. I mean, it's good enough a punishment for murder or a sumo wrestler, why not in this case?

Japan is hardly the only nation in the world that does not grant citizenship to people who are born within its borders. You might want to check some European nation's citizenship regulations before asking Japan to be more "civilised".

I personally think she should be allowed to stay. The child should not be punished for her parents misdeeds.

"Japan is hardly the only nation in the world that does not grant citizenship to people who are born within its borders. You might want to check some European nation's citizenship regulations before asking Japan to be more "civilised"."

Japan is more civilized than europe. Europe has many social problems with under privileged & unhappy Arfrican migrants. Japan paid more aids for natural disasters & economic developments. If that girl is allowed to get PR, there will be floods of other kids will come. There will be more baby productions in Japan.

If Japan has to accepts coming Tsunami of human wave, Honshu island will be sanked into the Ocean. Besides that it is densely populated in urban area. Unemployment & homeless armies are marching on the roads. Authority will decide that case according the national interest. Not for pleasing anyone.

Just fine the parents and let them stay. I feel sorry for the kid.

Two years ago, Japan gave this special visa to an Iranian college student until she finishes her degree. But the government deported the parents for "over-staying." This case is different in the sense that the parents committed a crime not only in Japan but also in the Philippines.

Zenpun - "Japan is more civilized than europe. Europe has many social problems with under privileged & unhappy Arfrican migrants"

Bit of a cheeky comment this. Europe opened many of its borders to migrants from ex colonies and now to many tens of thousands of refugees each year from the world over. Its true many are unhappy and underpriviledged but they were given a new home, not a guarantee of success. Many more do succeed and make a very positive contribution. Admittedly many of the peoples removed from their countries during Japans colonial period have remained and prospered, but if youre honest, theyve not been made too welcome have they? And as for Japans efforts in helping refugees, well, laughable is the word that immediately comes to mind. Before you put the country on a pedestal, open your eyes and look around you, there is plenty of underpriveledge and unhappiness to be seen.

As for the plight of Noriko Calderon, as unfortunate as it is, Japan isnt to blame for the situation. Her parents broke the law and unless they're in Japan running from some danger, they probably should be deported. Noriko seems to be a victim of her parents crime.

Some have said the Japanese authorities should let the girl stay, but wouldnt it be more cruel to separate Noriko from her family?

Didn't we just go through this? Is this a re-print of a previous story or is the fact that they got 7,400 people to sign a patition news?
