not even worth a divorce

At least it's a step in the right direction to downsize the growing poverty level.

I'm glad to see the Finance Ministry finally supporting divorce.

dasyhard, no this will INCREASE the poverty level. Just look at the War on Poverty in the U.S. This will not help anybody.

Dubya, what are you talking about?!?! This sounds like another one of those idiotic positions that says we cannot support poor starving people because it will make them lazy. Nonsense.
Japan has several issues here to overcome. 1. the stigma associated with being a single parent. 2. The resulting employment, social and economic limitations that stigma imposes. 3. The limitations of viable employment options for women and single moms. 4. The low salaries paid to women. 5. Lack of affordable child care solutions.
We need to fund people today so that they can live today. These problems are not resolvable overnight. People need support now while the government follows that up with real changes to make things better.
Welfare systems are only needed when economies fail to provide opportunities to all segments of society. The notion of waging war on poverty and losing the battle simply means that the methods of fighting poverty are wrong or imcomplete. In the case of the US welfare was not properly followed with eductional opportunities, retraining solutions and long term economic and social changes to enable families to break the cycle of poverty. This is happening here now too.
You cannot simply decide not to pay to solve these problems as we have seen they soon develop into issues that impact all of society. Solutions must be found and money spent to solve these issues. Period!

How much per family?
redsox at 12:54 PM JST - 22nd October
This is only a bandage solution. What happens after FY09? They should work to get spouses to pay child support, so that my taxes don't have to.

I thought it was six billion, like in the headline.
bokudayo at 02:11 PM JST - 22nd October
Let's see.. if there are 1 million single-parent families that receive help, they get a whopping 6000 yen.
If there are only 50,000 single-parent families that receive help, they each get 120,000.
If there are only 500 of these families, then 12,000,000 yen per family.
One of those amounts sounds really nice. Yo, JT!! Go fetch some more information so you can complete the story! How many families will be be eligible for this money?

Welfare system is neccessary but be careful with rotten people who continue to marry and divorce time after time, again and again; and create so many single parents for taxpayers to support.
Klein2 at 07:04 AM JST - 23rd October
You have heard of the marriage tax? Is this the divorce subsidy?
tclh at 11:20 AM JST - 23rd October
Its like this : A marries to B and they have 1 child -> divorce;B becomes single mum ,gets benefit from welfare. A marries to C, have another child -> divorce; C becomes single mum, get benefit from welfare... A goes ahead and does this again and again with other women and it is perfectly legal!!
