Enter the yakuza. I'm sure their black market tableware dept. will be putting in a few bids.

If they didn't pay the politicians so much they would have enough to get the right plates......

Smoke and mirrors. Another minor pointless action designed to say "Hey, we're doing something about our corruption and spending. See?"

They need to be looking at a lot more serious issues. Like why X legislator's brother is receiving contracts to pave over Y river in Z prefecture for no reason. Or why A foundation spends millions year on year with zero benefit to anyone other than the guys running it.

Cut costs somewhere that matters. Or just be honest that you don't care and will carry on spending. At least then the population can rise up and put you against the wall for your crimes against society.

I remember JAL were going to avert their fiscal crisis by not painting their jet-engine-intake-turbine-shaft-nose-cone with spirals (used by crew to visually check if the engine is turning or not).

    Net result, nada.

In fact JAL later had a crisis when they got the left side and right side engines mixed up.

The point is that as long a you do something, you cannot be accused of doing nothing.

They should do away with tables altogether, never mind tableware.

Just sit on the floor and order in Dominos.

This instruction from the Ministry of Finance worries me because the last time I was invited to a diplomatic reception at an overseas Japanese Embassy, the food and drink was served using paper plates and plastic cups. Then again, considering the manners of some of the other guests, I suppose an argument could be put forward for the installation of feeding troughs and slopps buckets at every Japanese mission overseas.

JET Program bash by any chance?

  • timorborder at 12:26 PM JST - 2nd July

Altria - I find your tone insulting, I would not be seen dead at a JET Program function. The function I am talking about involved a BBQ put on by a Japanese embassy for a visiting delegation of JGSDF officers and senior NCOs, I was hauled along as an acting ADC to a senior officer of the hosting country. Wonderful afternoon where everybody got totally blasted sitting around on a manicured lawn surrounding by autumn leaves. Only problem was that almost all the uniformed personnel had spent the previous 4 days on a joint exercise (ration packs). As such, at the sight of fresh food, things became a feeding frenzy. Paper plates were a good choice.
