Fire disrupts Ikebukuro subway station

TOKYO —

A fire broke out at Ikebukuro subway station on the Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line on Thursday night, shutting down the subway service briefly on the entire line but no one was hurt. About 10 cubic meters of scrap wood for construction work left in the first basement level was burned in a fire believed to have broken out around 9:20 p.m., but the fire was extinguished about 40 minutes later, according to the Tokyo Fire Department.

As smoke reached train platform areas at the station, the operator, Tokyo Metro Co., said it suspended train runs on the entire Fukutoshin Line for about one hour from 9:30 p.m. and evacuated people in underground passages. Scrap wood placed near the ticket gates and the station office on the first basement floor is believed to have caught fire. A station staffer called the fire department, saying smoke entered the office and flames were seen.
