What's the point of relocating this within Tokyo?
How about Chiba? With Aqualine nothing more than a tourist attraction Kisarazu and surrounding areas are just begging for business development.
Moving it to Koto-ku is useless waste of money.

Wow!! A Japanese minsiter is "cautious" and won't do anything until "carefully considering". Who would have thought it? I agree moving it within Tokyo makes no sense. Either it is a tourist attraction (in which case leave it where it is) or it is a working fish market (and so move it way further out).

I think the whole point of the fish market is to sell/bring the fish into Tokyo for the various retail outlets and restaurants within Tokyo, who find it more accessible than to have to go driving out to Chiba or other remote fisheries.

Yes, exactly. I have met people who are buyers for restaurants, supermarkets, hotels, etc and even now they have to either get the last train there or drive there in the early morning. It has to be as close to central Tokyo as possible.

They want to move it before the Tokyo Olympics because it stinks and they don't want the boats in the harbor making it look natural.

gogogo - do you realise that the proposed new location is between the proposed main stadium and the proposed athletes village? Your comment above does not seem to make a lot of sense.

The carcinogens aren't that big a deal when you take into account all the mercury in the tuna and other top of the chain fish.

majimeaussie: I know exactly where the location is because I live inside both proposed Olympic zones...

You are just around the corner from me then. As to your comment, why would they want to move the fish markets to in between the main stadium and olympic village if "it stinks"? Are you also saying to make the harbor look natural by not having boats from the fish markets on the harbor?

Such as?

Cicada - I believe the main one is benzene.
The real issue is Ishihara fancies himself a real estate developer, and wants the land under Tsukiji for a re-development a la the Harajuku "jail" which turned out to be a Mitsui Fudousan mixed used development with office, retail, and residential.
There is absolutely no reason for the market to move - it's a cultural landmark of Tokyo, the market workers don't want to move, and the only identifiable "candidate" area is heavily contaminated since it is made from reclaimed land.
I rarely say this, but this looks like helpful government action on the part of the fisheries minster. Well done.

majimeaussie: It does smell when you go past it and all cars and buses would have to pass it to get to the village unless they built a new bridge or something.
My comment on natural was sarcastic, they would want the boats removed to make the harbor cleaner / bare looking I would imagine since they would be in all TV shots of "tokyo".
