child abuse is awful in japan,,thank god for this baby hatch..there needs to be more of them in every city in japan...life over abuse

I would say not just japan but globally.

Getting sick of infants being placed into microwave ovens ,etc in the west too. Don't believe it there are a few cases where a parent, etc nuked their babies. Just check CNN, etc another mother just got a life-term for doing it.

Myself sick of it. Babies don't happen out of the blue and it takes both to decide on not having protection. Same with fights it takes 2 or more. There is no way it can happen if one party sez "I refuse".

In short people need to start taking responsibility for their actions and don't blame it on youth, etc. If you can make a baby don't try to tell me our ancestor were clueless either when they had condoms millenia ago or figured out the circle. If you can make it you are old enough to care for it.

Strewth that is disgusting. How can anyone abandon a baby like that?

Me and me missus Mildred tried for kids for years, but it wasn`t meant to be. She would have loved bringing up a nipper.

We tried to adopt, but the man said we was too old. Better to have new parents that love the kid, than growing up in a childrens home, innit!

People should be taught that having kids is a lifetime responsibility. If acouple is going to "do things" then they have to expect a baby to result.

I saw on Telly, that abortions are normal in Japan, and people don`t think it is bad. Strewth what do they learn them at school?

How do they know right off that it's foreign? Mabe because it's black?

Although I dislike the use of the word "hatch" here, the program is progress. The recent baby (post) has a higher percentage of being half Brazilian or Filipino than other nationalities.

  • TheNewZen at 04:56 AM JST - 10th September

"hatch" or not, I think it is as a good thing.

knews: that is a very good point you made about humans just being another animal and child abandonment being part of the human condition. It is just that we arrogantly place ourselves above all other living beings. In fact, the stupidity does not end there, humans even place themselves above other humans.

A horrible story. Yesd, horrible. These baby hatches are just another excuse for people to be irresponsible with their choices, and the height of selfishness. And I agre: how do they know its a foreign baby?

  • LFRAgain at 09:56 AM JST - 10th September

To assume that everyone who's put a child in these hatches is irresponsible would be, well, irresponsible. There are countless circumstnaces under the sun that might make it a necessity to use the hatch, not the least of which are rape.

Furthermore, the staid and unrealistic conservative viewpoint of forcing a teen or teens who are emotionally incapable of raising a child to raise said child contributes more to unhappy homes that end in divorce than anyone is willing to admit.

As for the nationality of the child, yes, I'm going to agree that it's ridiculous that they just assumed the child was foreign, obviously based on appearance alone. Considering there are currently a number of “international” marriages between Japanese nationals and foreign nationals in Japan, this child could very well be the – and I loathe to use the term – “half” offspring of just such a union. But clearly, they seem confident the child is foreign. Considering the alleged anonymous nature of the hatch, I really do wonder how they came to this conclusion.

On the surface, it sounds blatantly racist, i.e., the baby didn’t have Japanese-Asian enough features, and I don’t doubt that a degree of racism, however non-malicious, plays a large part in the determination of the baby’s nationality. But thinking more on it, it makes me wonder if this hatch isn’t as anonymous as its being presented. I suspect some sort of surveillance might have something to do with the assessment of the baby’s national origins.

As to Professor Kashiwame's call for more debate, I wasn't aware that the debate had ended.

this hatch isn’t as anonymous as its being presented

Apparently the parent(s) of 10 of the 17 babies were identified. So much for anonymity.

  • LFRAgain at 10:56 AM JST - 10th September

Exactly. And I wonder how these parents feel about having been identified? Can't be a good feeling, I imagine, especially after all the hubbaballo over it being anonymous in the first place.

‘‘We have decided to make our report public in order to stir debate on the baby hatch.’’

    More like 'stir the pot'.

  • Orangeporange at 07:46 PM JST - 12th September

I am sure the foreign baby will be quickly adopted. Not so sure about the handicapped ones though.
