Fukuoka gets Y3.8 bil boost from Hawks' Japan Series victory

TOKYO —

The Softbank Hawks took the coveted winning spot of the Japan Series after shutting out the Chunichi Dragons in the last of a grueling seven-game contest Sunday. It was the first time since 2003 that the Hawks were declared the series champions.

But the real winner may just be Fukuoka Prefecture, which hosted the final and saw a record number of attendees, and accompanying tourist cash, Sankei Shimbun reports.

Preliminary calculations by economists have found that the games stimulated Fukuoka’s previously flagging economy to the tune of 3.8 billion yen through store sales, train fares and toll road expenses, and food and drink sales.

The Chubu region would have seen a 2.1 billion yen economic benefit had the Dragons taken home the championship, according to Kyoritsu Institute. The institute added that big sports wins often spark a consumer mentality in the local populace, Sankei reported.

The Chubu region says it still expects some economic benefit to be had from so-called “Oen Kansha” (Thanks for cheering us on) sales.

I hear those Oen Kansha sales can b very good. Ummm, economists? There is no such thing, otherwise we wouldnt be seeing such ups and downs in economies since economists can predict the future, right?

That's only because they're having sales all over the place (up to 50% in many places) so of course people are going to go and buy.
