Powerful typhoon pummels Kanto; heads toward Fukushima

This storm poses a real threat to everyone in the Tokyo area, as well as areas north, not just Fukushima. Take care, folks.

I bet they're making all the preparations already for another "accidental" release of radiation polluted water.

Let's just wait and see what kind of news stories come out of this after the typhoon.

I can see the spin doctors of TEPCO rubbing their hands together already... Tomorrow's headline will be that they had to purge another couple hundred thousand tons of contaminated water into the ocean.

This is a strong one, take care everyone out there!! The water release in Fukushima is a given, most likely a very large volume of a specially difficult to handle contamination.

So, there has been an official warning released by the meteorological agency and trains will be disrupted from mid-morning. Am waiting for the company I work for to announce work is cancelled tomorrow due to dangers of travel during a strong typhoon. However, I work for a Japanese company and I have my doubts of common sense will prevail over a need to be almighty!

This is exactly the kind of opportunity TEPCO wants to 'accidentally' release a few hundred tonnes of irradiated water into the Pacific, then ask for more handouts.

Fukushima is one continuous string of events proving, repeatedly, that Murphy's Law is correct.

@the_ odeman I totally agree with you. Most Japanese people don't trust the half-truths coming out of TEPCO. It's the passivity and docility of the Japanese public which is the problem.

I think it's more that they're not politically involved, or don't really know what to do. They're always making anti-nuclear protests every week or so, but they are never politically engaged and thus it doesn't turn into a political movement, which obviously won't change anything.

So if we have massive leaking and overflow of contaminated water we will know it right away..............we won't announce it for a couple of weeks mind you.

Its only a CAT 1 with wind gusts up to 100kt and it is getting weaker. Not sure what this guy is smoking saying this is the strongest storm in 10 years.

If the plant were to collapse — which it’s been showing signs of doing — then that fuel would be all over the place and it would be impossible to cool. And that would be a real… you could get far greater emissions than we did initially.

It is the headline that is extremely misleading. What he said was the strongest storm to pass through the Kanto region.

Trying to get home from work in the middle of this, is already a pain! Never mind tomorrow! Will be as snug as a bug in a rug till the typhoon passes around noon! Then off to work!

We are burning too much oil and nature has a tendency to attack countries those have high level of CO2 emission.

perhaps things will gonna be fine, except the fukushima area, hope this one will not cause more leaks, it is an headache to see if it will again allow tons of contaminated water running to the sea and the nearby environment.

Water leaks are small potatoes compared to what the result would be if the spent fuel pool in reactor No.4 collapses.

Don't panic, the news media loves to control people minds (fears)... this will be a storm to take care but nothing to be scared about. I have been thru cat 4 a 5 being from Louisiana and you are not in control.. mother nature is. But this will be a good one to tell the grandchildren about.

Here comes another opportunity for TEPCO to dump even more contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean. More typhoons this way please.

Well, with the amount of rain and the strength of the winds there will be little evidence of a radiation leak cos it will be spread over an extremely large area and 'diluted by the sea' (hopefully). I can just imagine a couple of the long-term unemployed temp workers at Fukushima pulling out a few plugs on some of the tanks to gain a bit of purchase on the overflowing tanks with no witnesses. However, all jokes aside, there is a serious problem of rain water overflowing the containment vessel housing the fuel rods. This will leak highly radioactive water into the ground and the ocean.

If indeed ferocious Wipha lands in Fukushima directly, the damages inflicts on the already impaired environments in surrounding lands and sea could be be substantial if not catastrophic. For one thing, those hastily built water tanks which hold radioactive water will be at the mercy of the destructive force of the nature.

TEPCO which is lack of sound long term strategy and solution to deal with rooting causes to begin with might find itself in the compromised position to meet its nemesis once again. it's sad, isn't it?

Aside TEPCO, guys, anyone who lives along the projected path of Wipha please take good care of yourself and your love ones during the storm. Don't go outside unless you must. As they say, It's better safe than sorry.

It's pretty amazing how many posts are on this one thread alone about the typhoon, Fukushima and what may occur during the typhoon. Many of the posters state their concerns...some legitimate, some not. But all of the posts are important. You would think TEPCO would sit around a table and discuss exactly what is being discussed on this thread as well as any other thread about the typhoon and Fukushima on the net. I have a pretty good feeling that we are going to see some news about stupid mistakes that happened during the typhoon because TEPCO executives are too stupid to listen to the public or figure out the worst case scenarios and how to deal with them before they happen. I guess common sense and proactive doesn't exist in TEPCOs dictionary.

I can't imagine how TEPCO is going to contain all the contaminated runoff from all that rain. It's going to be bad enough in Tokyo with local "poor drainage" flooding. Fukushima is going to be a mess.

There used to be lots of posts belittling tsunamis. Saying it was much smaller than expected and not worth the panic. Guess it will be a while before we hear those again. People will almost certainly die because of this, as they do with pretty much every typhoon that hits Japan.

Wada - here is the website in English, but it is down for maintenance. Ha ha! However, I doubt if any trains are running at present. I'd say the reason the sure has not been updated is cos nobody can get to work. Stay in bed!

While I would have liked the day off, I'm glad Osaka and Kyoto didn't get too badly hit -- I don't think Kyoto in particular could have handled it after last time.

As of about 20 minutes ago at Kanda station, all the JR trains were suspended (Yamanote, Chuo, keihin Tohoku). Ginza line was running but with some delays. JR English page then was saying that almost all lines were suspended. Keio Inokashira line is running out of Shibuya now. (Specific information from my girlfriend's journey to work!)

At 10 am it was 170km ENE of Mito, so Fukushima 1 will be shaken but hopefully not too stirred.

Prem Kumar, is that you? I have been watching the Fukushima news daily from CA. I pray for Japan and people living near the power plant. We get almost no news here about it, so I search the web each morning to try and follow what is happening there and found this article. I wrote you an email just yesterday wondering where you were, and now I find your name on this site asking for a train schedule! I am hoping you are the Prem I know, married to Tomo. If you are, it is a miracle that I found your here! If you are a different Prem, I send you good wishes. I am sorry you are living with this nuclear nightmare. I hope this disaster is further averted, for the good of all the world.

I guess typhoon Francisco is also called Typhoon Numer 26 by the millions of Japanese here in Japan and names like Francisco and exotic names like Wipha mean absolutely nothing to us here in Japan because in Japan we go by numbers and Francisco in Japan is known as typhoon number 27 and now 27 and 28 are near Okinawa, do I have any idea what their off the wall names are, no and do wish here at JT, JAPAN Today would use the the Japanese numbers for these typhoons so as not to confuse us.
