with an eye to spurring the weakening Japanese economy amid growing fuel and commodity prices.

?? prices of commodities and fuel are tumbling like anything. Medium/small size companies are victim of Chinese companies, credit ease is not the solution.

However, if we read this article with different perspective i.e. "with an eye to coming elections...." these measures may work.

I have a suggestion. Recently I saw a graph showing how productivity decreases as temperatures rise. It was inverted and overlaid on a graph showing how energy consumption increases as air conditioner use increases. As it turns out the lines cross at 26 degrees not 28. Lowering office temperatures to 26 from 28 will have an immediate increase in productivity and will therefore immediately lift the sagging economy. Thank you.

there's a suprise more subsidies to fishermen and farmers - they have no plans on becoming more efficient we, the tax payers, keep giving them free handouts.

How about more subsidies to large scale farms, including grants for compulsory purchase of small, unsuccessful farms? Most Japanese farms are family businesses that go under when there isn't anyone left to do the work - the heirs don't want to go into farming so the land is either left uncultivated or converted to real-estate. Scaling up the farms is probably the only solution.

Well, the U.S. government was gracious enough to provide me with $300 several weeks ago as part of the economic stimulus package of the Bush administration simply because I have filed the proper tax forms with the IRS for the past decade. So, since I actually DO pay taxes in Japan, I think Prime Minister Fukuda and the LDP ol` boys should provide us all with, say, ¥60,000, to help us "stimulate" the Japanese economy. I would even promise to spend my hard-earned $300 here in Japan!

What this shortened version of the original news story lacks is the fact that the government is not going to release any details of the so-called economic package til around the end of the month. In the end, I doubt it will make any difference.

A great way for then to help would be for the LDP to stop shovelling money into useless construction contracts and raking in a percentage of taxpayers money from their pals in the construction industry
