100million n U won?
And that is the whole debate in a nutshell. A bunch of talking heads that are less than useless. The real fear is what influence the Imperial Household Agency holds over the Diet. If these overpaid bottom dwellers are allowed to proliferate than even more tax money goes down the drain. There needs to be 100% transparency as to how much tax money goes to support these fools.

Shirely in the 21st Century women are equal, they always have been of course, but men's brains and sense of superiority being so 'as they are' it took a long time for their intelligence to catch up. Equal. Equal. Equal. On ALL counts. What is there to discuss but a few old backward thinking men's attittudes to women?

I love this:
“Keeping the imperial family to a small number is not bad in light of national budget,” he told a news conference last month marking his 46th birthday. “Naturally, we need a certain number to maintain the imperial family as is.”
Sounds like a farmer talking about his livestock during a market slump.
Which, in this case, is about what it is.........

It's a good job the Diet are talking about this now. It's not like Japan has any other problems that need to be sorted out at the moment anyway.

Someone mentioned this a day or two ago, but maybe Aiko-sama being able to leave the Imperial Palace and become a commoner isn't such a bad thing after all. You know what they say about being careful what you wish for....

I hope they spend weeks hashing this over, as it is the most important thing that comes to mind about Japan as a whole these days.
Everything else is so perfect, so they have lots of time on their hands.

wasn't there recently some issue like this about the royals in the uk?
i think it is necessary to keep the imperial institution as streamlined as possible, otherwise the many on the periphery might start thinking they too should be entitled to receiving funds from the national coffers.

I thought legal discrimination on the grounds of gender was unconstitutional. The supine Supreme Court should strike the law down, but it won't.

The UK system just changed to give equal status to female heirs to the throne. Previously males had priority even if they had an older sister.

Hey guys!
Think you're paying too much tax?
Here's where the tax goes:
>Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda said Thursday the government would study the possibility of allowing women in the imperial family to keep their imperial status after marriage.
In terms of salaries and other expenses, I wonder how much this little project is going to cost!

Go back to the way it was - where women could rule. This is a "recent" rule - and a stupid one at that!

This is actually the most important issue for the Japanese people as a whole. Our Emperor is our connection to the very Gods who founded Japan and the Japanese people. Suggesting that other temporal issues might be more important shows a lack of understanding about what we Japanese consider important.

Or, they could just scrap the monarchy and save a bundle?
