The only problem is the two he shot in the air. What comes up, must come down. And how do you feel about it coming down on your house, car or even worse, you?

My old Sergeant Major would have kittens if he heard about this. "You What?" He would have had this guy on the parade ground at 04:30 bashing himself on the head while screaming "I will not UD, I will not UD!" (unauthorized discharge) Seriously, however, this is just the latest in a long list of UD events with Japan's self defense forces. Who can forget the big grey "war canoe" that started a forest fire about 10 years ago after mixing up practice and real rounds. With their fast-firing gun, they put down a barrage on a national forest (somewhere down in Fukui I think). There was also the F-15 Eagle pilot who just could not resist the temptation of squeezing off a sidewinder missile at his wingman while on a CAP over the Sea of Japan. He shot down his wingman and blamed it on a faulty system. Wonder what this pilot is doing these days? My personal favorite, however, was being shot at by a SDF member back in the early '90s while on PK duty in Cambodia. He probably had his finger on the trigger and squeezed off by accident. The only problem was that one of my gun groups thought he was firing at them. They returned fire and nearly killed the poor guy. Never so hide or hair of the incident in the Japanese press.

Timorborder, Interesting story. Although I never experienced anything to the degree of what you mentioned, I was awfully surprised when I entered sonar control during an ASW free-play exercise only to find that I was the only one in the room not asleep. THAT kind of stuff, I saw in spades from the JMSDF.

That private probably experienced more action outside of the practice environment than most SDF members would hope to get in their careers.

Clearly the JSDF need more live fire training. Preferably with someone shooting back. Perhaps if Japan ends up sending troops of Afghanistan..

My original post to you got deleted because evidently it didn't contain anything directly related to the story. So...

The obligatory part: This is shocking! This wasn't even an accidental discharge but an intentional discharging of a weapon outside of a training environment! Totally unacceptable, blah blah...

In case you're interested, a bubble-head is what we in the Navy call Sailors who serve on submarines. It's a widely used term which in no way is derogatory. Calling a submariner a bubble-head is like calling a navy pilot an airdale or a brownshoe.

"Everybody shoots a rifle while on duty"

Hey, it's fun to shoot rifles!

USN, Also, I should have mentioned that the ship I was on during the ASW ex. I mentioned before was the JDS Kongo. Of the 6 JMSDF ships I rode, I found all of them to be far cleaner and the food far tastier than on USN ships, however, if I had to go into battle on the best of them (of the ones I rode, that would be the JDS Hiei) or the worst USN ship I ever rode (hands down, the USS Kitty Hawk, even with Capt. Parker), I'd take the USN ship without a moments hesitation.
