This guy must be oblivious to the world around him if he doesn't have the common sense NOT to chain his bag up at the train station. The funny thing is that his name is not being released. Had this been a foreigner in Japan, his name would have been all over the news.

He should be forced to pay, as people in Japan are responsible for costs incurred for delaying trains (i.e. suicide). What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

What a rocket scientist. Didn't have enough money, blah, blah, blah...

just stupid :) after the 2 suitcases ( which contained bombs, but didn't explode due to a defect) where found in German trains (a year ago or so) there are signs and warnings not to leave your luggage unattended everywhere... (not just in German)

appart from that... did he think his luggage is safe because he chained it to a bench?!?! If there wouldn't be the high fear of terrorism, the bag would have been gone in the blink of an eye...

The Hamburg-ers are paranoid - a terrorist wouldn't want to draw attention to his unattended bag like that, unless he was really stupid.

Or unless because it's only paranoia, as you said, the police doesn't do anything. And then, the terrorists learn something new, if you chained your bomb, the police wouldn't take it!

    I prefer paranoia to desaster.

A common trait I fear is all TOO common here. Have you never noticed that most citizens, whilst upstanding citizens they are, blatantly ignore the rules.

Japanese should study common things before going overseas. There are potentially many guns, bombs that terrorists might use there in Europe

Not enough money to pay for the locker, but enough to go sightseeing. Hmm...

obviously an innocent mistake, cut him a break. Would a real terrorist use such an obvious ploy?

  • ratpack at 01:38 PM JST - 24th August

Wow he is really up to date with today's world isn't he?? The terrorists have created a fear factor around the globe. Did he not know that an unattended bag would seem fairly suspicious. Or maybe he has been living in a cave for the past 8 years and didn't realise the world is not the same safe place anymore.

Everybody here search for a common sense, or put label stupid on this guy.

I'm sure my mother in law would do something similar. She would enter restricted area to be taken photo. She is very impulsive and thinks everything is allowed in a way. When you tell her there are certain rules and manners she answers she paid to go there and she want to use the moment.

Well I guess this guy just wanted to save few Euros - not stupid. He thought as his name is on the suitcase nobody will think it's something dangerous. And he knows people steal over there so he put the chain - simple as that. Make him pay and make it public so no other follow his example.

I can see him calling home to his mother now: "Ore Ore da yo. Chotto toraburu to aimashita. 5 hyakumanen ga hitsuyou ima. Hayaku okutte kudasai".
