Weird. But it sounds like fun, so all the power to them.

A group of burly diggers from Saitama took home the first prize of 100,000 yen and a golden shovel after burrowing down a staggering 3.48 meters in the allotted time of 30 minutes in Narita on Sunday.

Yikes! Being in a hole 348cm deep would concern me a tad as the shoring would be next to nothing if at all if they dug that in 30 minutes. I guess the Japanese version of the UK's 'Health and Safety' were not at that event.

Could they not find a place to dig that would actually be of some use? Excavation location, treasure hunt, construction site, playground, etc.... What a waste of energy to have to refill the holes.....
