Heavy rain to hit western, eastern Japan

TOKYO —

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit wide areas of western to eastern Japan through Monday as a seasonal rain front becomes more active, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Saturday. The agency warned of landslides and swollen rivers while calling for precaution over gusty winds and lightening as warm and wet air drifts in over western to eastern Japan through Sunday.

Heavy rain of more than 20 millimeters per hour was observed in some areas of Nagasaki Prefecture and around 15 mm in some areas of Fukuoka Prefecture. Hourly rainfall of 30 to 60 mm may hit some areas in the Kyushu, Shikoku and Kinki regions through Sunday night and other areas in eastern Japan from around Sunday noon to early Monday, it said. The agency predicted up to 250 mm of rain in northern Kyushu in 24 hours through Sunday morning, up to 150 mm in the southern Kyushu and Shikoku regions and 100 mm in the Chugoku region.

Been cloudy all day here in Yamaguchi, with scattered showers, but no thunderstorms as the scare mongering news was belching on about this morning on local TV.

Both western and eastern Japan. Has anyone looked at a map. It's not exactly a wide country. Why not just say the obvious that, "it's going to rain" or "it's going to rain in Japan" just in case someone forgets which country this is.

Because the term "western Japan" usually just refers to Kyushu, Shikoku and western Honshu, and the term "eastern Japan" is sometimes (and probably in this instance) used to just refer to Kanto and south Tohoku.

Which leaves Okinawa, Ogasawara islands, northernmost Honshu and Hokkaido out.

See, you learn something new every day.
