The season's heaviest snowfall, brought on by a cold air mass, continued to dump snow on the Japan Sea coast and parts of Hokkaido on Tuesday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency predicted that the heavy snowfall would continue until Wednesday morning, NTV reported.

By 2 p.m. Tuesday, snow was 3.3 meters deep in Uonuma, Niigata Prefecture, and 1.59 meters in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture. By Wednesday morning, the agency forecast up to 60 cms of snow for the Hokuriku region, 50 cm in Tohoku as well as the Japan Sea side of Hokkaido, and 20 cm in the northern Kinki region.

The agency also warned of avalanches as well as rough seas off the Japan Sea coast due to strong winds.
