This is very noble. I agree completely with the mayor and Mr. d'Escoto, but what can the UN do.

So, what is the population of Hiroshima? 10 million? And, they only got 370,000 signatures, most of which were forced by high school student's peers. It doesn't say much for the community or society as a whole, does it? One would think, in places like Hiroshima and Nagasaki they would have close to a 100% participating rate for anything to do anti-nuclear protests. Wooops! There goes my imagination again!

Akiba should hand the signatures to Obama - he's the one who'll be in charge of the biggest single batch of nukes in the world. Pretty scary thought... I wonder if the U.S. nuclear arsenal will get any smaller under Obama...peaceful guy that he is, he should at least cut it in half, right?

Why bdo so many people want to rid the planet of nuclear weapons?? I can't understand it!!! The Japanese were controlled by a maniacle,blood-thristy tyrant and nuclear bombs helped end their reign of terror. Japan got off much easier than Europe. I'm sure that if the U.S had started dropping bombs filled with salt all over Japan the result would have been deadly for the civilian population. It would have been a ecological end to war...WOW, how wonderful that sounds!! Salt is mankinds best friend when it is used in small amounts. When it is sprinkled liberally over mountains everything dies and slides down the mountain. If put in fields it kills all plants and in water it dilutes...GOSH, but it kills everything. The next time you hold some in your hand repress that terror filled shudder!!

they should do a Mixi online petition, will get 10 times more signatures and be just as useless

I would have more respect for this guy if he didn't let the peace museum in Hiroshima be abused by ultra nationalist propaganda. Their exhibits teach the view that Japan had no choice to go to war (due to the ABCD blockade) upon the thousands of schoolchildren that visit the place every year. The innocent people that died were not only the victim of the ones who threw the bomb, but also victims of the government that turned them into a target. Once mr. Akiba starts to address all the causes to prevent such a thing from happening again then I'll be less cynical that his purpose is more than just raising the profile of his city.

I dont like war but if the US didnt drop the bomb far more Japanese would have been killed by an invasion of the homeland.

It must make people feel warm and fuzzy inside to sign this paper but then there is reality. The only thing that has kept North Korea from invading South Korea for the past 50 years is knowning that a bunch of nukes would be heading for North Korea if they tried anything...welcome to the REAL WORLD am sorry to say.

I just wonder how many of these signatories are using power supplied by Nuclear Reactors in Japan...

Probably for the same reasons that they don't want anyone owning a gun, or eating meat or a zillion other things that in an ideal world makes sense but doesn't in reality.
