So they are calling the Nuclear Safety Agency now "METI’s nuclear watchdog agency", the same people that planted questions and actively promotes nuclear power, I seriously can't believe anything from these people, they probably just said "well it's only 1 year old, so it wont break... here your certificate"....

It would be interesting to know the content and results of these so-called stress tests, though the 'nuclear industry' claim that lay-people would not understand them. But until details are made public, or at least published, people will be inherently suspicious of them, that they are just another government/ industry whitewash job, and with good reason too...

I believe the tests.
Look at it this way. Japan already struck out with three strikes with nuclear messes.
Hiroshima...nah....that was a trick!
Nagasaki...hmmm maybe
Fukushima...now we are talking
A catch phrase they picked up some place...Never Again

Hokkaido shows some sanity.

JapanGal, the first 2 were not Japans and remember anything made by man is bound to fail. It is just that somethings when they fail are more destructive.

I would think this is a good thing, especially with the mass power shortage. I'm tired of everyone believing every nuclear power plant in the world is about to go critical and that nuclear power is going to destroy the world... In the entire history of civilization using nuclear power..and the thousands of operational reactors in the world..how many critical, severe accidents have we had? Do you know? Asbestos is 100x higher on the problem scale than all the nuclear power plants in the world combined, yet I never saw mass protests over it. Nuclear power will always be demonized into being this evil, vile creation, by different groups for one reason or another, and it's absurd.

Good news. If there was an accident it is is miles away, so who cares.

lustacular, have you booked a long term billet in Iwaki, Koriyama, Minami Soma, then mate? If you fancy nuclear power, if it is safe, live there. The Japan Times says "As for the government-mandated stress tests to be carried out on all reactors nationwide, the unit will only have to undergo the second part — a computer simulation. " I'll wager that this will not be the only exception to the testing regime and the computer simulation itself will be a farce.

I think the test is to see how much stress Japanese citizens can be subjected to, by causing them to keep thinking about the safety of those reactor plants..

Finally, people should really learn that there is nothing wrong with nuclear power.

Non-nuke - we have to take this route, now. No delay.

warnerbro - As someone who lives in the shadow of a nuclear power plant, I have to tell you, I'm not worried. Not in the slightest. Despite the attempts to panic and incite hysteria. I just ask myself a simple question. How likely am I to die from a nuclear accident? And how likely am I to die by getting struck by lighting, while simultaneously being run over by a car and mauled by a bear? The odds are about the same, though it tips towards the latter. Since I'm much more likely to die of a heart attack, or car accident, living next to a nuclear power plant doesn't really concern me.

This is not good. We've already learned how dangerous nuclear power is. Shut 'em all down!

There's a discussion to be had about the future of nuclear power in Japan, but for the time being we have to use what's available. They can't just throw up 10, 20 gas burning power plants and turn them on tomorrow. Restarting some nuclear reactors is not ideal, but it is sensible given the power shortage. It's easy to bash nuclear power on the internet, but it's not a solution.

Of course, as long as it happens in Hokkaido, miles away from Tokyo, there is no problem. They are also building a nuclear waste station up here where the waste from every nuclear station in Japan will be buried in the ground, 100m deep, and it is supposed to stay there for 100,000 years.

The heatwave is pretty much over, and we seem to have been doing OK with 3/4 of the nuclear power plants turned off.
So I say shut down 50% of the oldest, most dangerously located plants. And get cranking on some alternatives. A few years ago I might have told you that those alternatives should be new safe next-gen nuclear plants. But not any more. Nuclear is not the technology of the future anymore.
