Most people who travel have family's. A Family of 4 will be cheaper by car than by shinkansen.

No! No! It is not fare to compare the Japanese to sheep! I think more like pinguins??? GW heave traffic in NOT NEWS! Now if it were GW and NO HEAVE TRAFFIC, this would be real NEWS! Thank the God and Buddha etc..I drive no where near this kind of time wasting traffic, Tokyo is great during GW! Everyone is OUT OF TOKYO!!! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!!!!

Those big trucks cause so many problems. No rules on which lane they can drive in. They cut in and out and you any of the 3 lanes, travel at different ways and just get in the way. They get right up on your bum and then space the cars out. Look at the photo closely. The truck is slowing down traffic. Local roads might be faster than highways. Again, another backward thing in Japan. In addition, anyone wander why there would be a traffic jam in the middle of no where? i.e. no traffic planning or control.

The fools in their cars & riding the crowded trains, I decided a long time ago not to do that, I only travel locally during GW & Oshogatsu, then if I can I take a couple days after this madness, sweet it is!

"A uniform toll of 1,000 yen is charged for an unlimited distance for passenger cars and motorcycles equipped with electronic toll collection devices on expressways outside the Tokyo and Osaka metropolitan areas”

Not true - I just now got off the Joban Expressway, and paid ¥1,250. Every news source is saying 1000 yen, why doesn't even ONE of them check the facts of the situation before parroting some other source?
