Same old, same old. Why can this country not give its workers freedom and time to holiday when they want? Having kids is a burden if they are at school, but all this for 4 days??

Exactly Sherman.

Not to mention the fact that for many staff, these holidays (where it is often too busy and expensive to do anything for low income families) will mean they have to work an additional 5 days this month - probably on saturdays and sundays.

Im all against forcing companies to close in order to give their staff a break, but at least pay the staff!

Same old, same old.

Sherman -- agree. Calling a Saturday a holiday is just not right. If Japan worked smarter, rather than just harder, six-day work-weeks would not be the norm.

The fact that you have to 'gear up' for a holiday says that it is just as stressful as your everyday work day.

"a jumble of public holidays when an estimated 22.4 million travelers are expected to collectively spend 850 billion yen."

Cripes, no wonder it would have cost me an extra 70,000 yen to fly to my hometown last week instead of waiting until September, the departure date was too close to the friggin GW, lol

GW sucks! Like others say WHY THE HELL CANT people in this country simply take the holidays when THEY want them, locals have only themselves to blame.

Hint you only get one life..........So don't let some company make you WASTE IT!

"The yen’s relative weakness since last year and Japan’s diplomatic friction with China and South Korea were discouraging some people from traveling abroad this year, JTB added."

What has tourism got to do with diplomacy? Some days Japan gets along well with S Korea while other days are not.All this is media hype and Japanese people have nothing to worry about when they come to Korea! Anyway for those Japanese tourists who made it all the way to Korea! Welcome and Enjoy Your Stay in Korea!

I was at Kansai Airport today and there were much more people in the Peach area and quite few in the JAL/ANA area. I hope Peach can continue to do well because it is much easier on my pocketbook.

People who must work through the celebration may find it about as exciting as gridlock.

A lot. That's why Korea Tourism is predicting about 30% decrease of Japanese tourists this Golden Week.

Staying with family and do local celebrations. No traveling ever to plan and keep money for wise and worth spending, something a Japanese cannot even comprehend.

Sounds like the government is proud to make the whole country wait in line for a bit of fun and "so called" relaxation.

In some years, the public holidays and weekends can align to form a week-long vacation for Japan’s famously diligent workers.

When has this ever happened? I think the best you can ever expect is five days off in a row using just the national holidays.

Oh smith, "gearing up" for something just means getting ready for something, it doesn't have to imply a stress filled event.

I'm gearing up to head to Kamakura this Golden week, this doesn't mean I'm stressed out, it just means I am getting ready for it. Hope that helped you out.
