Two men and a 10-year-old boy were swept away by strong currents off a beach in Hokota City on Wednesday afternoon, with one of the men found dead and the other two still missing, police said.

Emergency services received a call at about 4.45 p.m. saying that two men and a boy had been swept away by currents off Kashimanada coast. The coast guard dispatched a helicopter to the area and the body of one of the men was recovered, but he was later pronounced dead at hospital.

The 10-year-old son of Kiyosumi Izuhara, 38, and one of the sons of Atsushi Hori, 43, were swept away initially, but Izuhara was able to bring Hori’s son back to the shore. Izuhara went back in to rescue his own son but he was later found unconscious by the search helicopter. Hori and Izuhara’s son are still missing, police said.

Police said Izuhara and his son went to the shore with Hori and his two sons at about 2 p.m., and were playing in the water near a man-made breakwater that jetted out some 100 meters from shore to prevent beach erosion. The area was marked as no entry following a death there in July due to strong currents.

Shouldn't have been playing in the sea after 1st September. Any Nihonjin will tell you that.

They wanted to enjoy the last summer-like days at the beach, what a tragedy. The parents should have taken more responsibility in chosing the place for swimming. They ignored the sign warning of deadly currents which led to the tragedy. so sad.
