Three weeks after a deadly typhoon pounded the island of Izu Oshima, clean-up work continues but with an added problem -- there is nowhere to store the estimated 110,000 tons of debris caused by landslides and flooding.
Officials said Monday that five disposal sites on the island were rapidly filling up and that the island's only incineration facility couldn't handle any more debris, NTV reported.
The port, which used to be three meters deep, is also blocked by hundreds of tons of mud, preventing any fishing boats from being able to leave port.
Local government officials have asked the Tokyo metropolitan government to help with debris disposal.
Meanwhile, the death toll from the typhoon rose to 35 Monday after the body of an unidentified woman was found. Six people are still missing.
