JAL eyes emergency escape drills for mechanics, ground staff

TOKYO —

Japan Airlines has decided to launch emergency escape drills for mechanics and other ground staff in addition to those currently conducted for pilots, co-pilots and flight attendants, JAL officials said Monday.

JAL devised the plan after a JAL group mechanic who has undergone such training helped passengers to escape when an airplane operated by Taiwan’s China Airlines burst into flames last August at Naha airport, they said. ‘‘We had thought it enough to conduct training only for crew members. We would now like to increase the number of trainees and enhance safety awareness of all employees,’’ a senior JAL official said.

I wouldn't feel very safe knowing the flight crew would be drilling their way to safety if anything went wrong.

Do these emergency escape drills cover what to do when the company crashes?
