I wonder what they say to the passengers in this type of situation.

Usually just some generic "A systems problem is forcing us to return to the airport." There's no need to get all dramatic about it. 777's are designed to remain in the air even on only one engine. The only tricky part is landing because you can't use thrust reversers to slow down. Even that is fine as long as you account for the longer roll-out.

Something like this?
"Ladies and gentlemen, we appear to have lost power in one of the engines. In the highly likely event that we lose power in the other engine, we would ask you to put on your life jackets and keep your seat belts fastened. This will do you no good whatsoever, but it may help your loved ones avoid difficulties with insurance claims should the company try to shift some of the responsibility to yourself."

I was on a JAL flight a year or so ago when on takeoff a bird was ingested inside the left engine. With 30+ years of aviation experience I noticed a slight thump and high pitch grind on this engine and eventual shutdown. Pilot put the aircraft in a slightly nose up turn to gain altitude with power from the good engine and circle back with an uneventful landing. Once landed and back at the terminal the pilot made the announcement on why we returned to the airport. Super job by the flight crew as not many even knew we were running on one engine nor there was ever a problem after the bird impact.
