Sarge - I fail to see how having LESS passengers SAVES FUEL?!?! FOr your information, an empty plane still uses about 70-80% of the fuel it uses when fully loaded. Having it fully loaded is the most economical and ecological way to use it.

This is yet another wacky action by a wacky airline, and yet another reason for not flying with them. Last time I flew with them, the food was terrible and the wine was the only thing I could stomach . . .I would never subject myself to drinking wine from a plastic bottle. Yuk. This is just plain daft. JAL have lost the plot.

Should go down like the proverbial lead balloon on flights to France.

  • Den Den at 10:26 AM JST - 5th August

Plastic bottles are probably a good idea if the wine is still of good quality.

If they really want to cut their flight loads and save fuel costs, instead of squeezing too many passengers into economy class, they should spread them out a little more, giving them adequate legroom and elbow room.

yeah then they could throw the luggage out before takeoff and stop serving food, those trays must be heavy.

Why don't they just say "plastic bottles are cheaper" ? I am really suspicious of the 30 million yen in fuel savings due to the weight reduction... JAL fails to state how many wine bottles they carry on one trip because the total weight is probably so minimal.

If they can restrict flying to only those who aren't metabo they'll save even more!

You know what's even better for the environment? JAL not flying anywhere.

Yeah right you're just thinking about your pocket JAL, replace the recyclable glass with plastic with no mention that the plastic is recyclable, real eco JAL!

Who cares? Sure some alcohol is nice for you but if you can't get through a flight without it then don't fly. I do enjoy a tipple now and then but would be just as happy if they did without all booze on flights due to the number of drunken idiots I've had the displeasure of flying with. Don't even get me started on the the times I've seen people drink themselves stupid and vomit in the aisles, effectively ruining the flight for everyone within olafactory distance.

ebisen - I see your point! OK, howz about charging overweight passengers an extra $10/1000 yen for each overweight kilogram?

  • kview at 11:05 PM JST - 5th August

Do they carry so many bottles of wine to make the change worth while ?

  • The758 at 06:22 AM JST - 6th August

I agree with Sarge: spread out the seats. JALs economy seating is terribly cramped.

  • ebisen at 10:18 AM JST - 6th August

Nothing against plastic bottles though - as long as the wine is good (even in economic) why should it be better having it served from heavy glass bottles?

Looks like they'll be sorting the trash onboard.

PET consists of polymerized units of the monomer ethylene terephthalate, with repeating C10H8O4 units. It contains the chemical elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. If fully burned, it produces only carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). PET is commonly recycled, and has the number "1" as its recycling symbol.

If the wine is of good quality, then plastic bottles will not ruin the taste. Come on, you still drink beer out of a can instead of a bottle, so what's all about this plastic thing. JAL's maybe not a good carrier, but is it british airways, air france and similar companies? And if it helps to save some fuel (i don't know), then it's okay for me...
