    > advising its nationals to stay alert and take necessary precautions when traveling to northwestern China’s Xinjiang region in view of the deterioration of the security situation there.

China's Govt says everything O.K. (As long as you don't carry a camera you will be fine).

Actually your more likely to be hit by a falling building during an earthquake than be hit by a Chinese Policeman - and when you do get hit by Chinese Policeman you probably deserved it!

I disagree. The Japanese journalists were hit after being taken into custody.

It is like this anywhere in the world. You take your chances. You have more of chance to get pickpocketed and have your money stolen than get hit by the police. Think what happened to that American kid in Singapore when he smashed car windows, etc. He deserved to be caned. You travel at your own risk.

Well, just stay at home and rip your passport to pieces.

OgieDoggie, exactly the fact that the "China's Govt says everything O.K. (As long as you don't carry a camera you will be fine)" makes me worried. Given the history of lies and terror by the Chinese government makes me immediately suspicious of whatever they say. Also, "as long as you don't carry a camera you will be fine" - what is the law against tourists carrying cameras? Or journalists? If you don't have a camera, if you only go to the places we designate, if you only follow exactly the explicit and intended orders you will be fine - then it means that it is not safe to go there because it's dangerous. The warning is justified.
