Japan issues 4,400 tourist visas for Chinese individuals in 3 months

4,400 in 3 months so it would make about 17,600 for this year

Over 1 million Chinese visited Japan last year.

You definitely have a problem with numbers don't you?

The average chinese Joe can not visit Japan because of visa issue. Until this year only groups with wealthy chinese could visit Japan. Now those wealthy chinese can visit Japan on an individual basis but 1 million chinese is not hard to believe. Japan would never deliver 1 million visa for chinese people even if they are wealthy.

What is the context for this? Is this too much? To little? What is the news?

News Flash - not everyone likes the babysitting that goes on on organised tours. Some people like to travel independently.

We are talking about chinese not about westerners. There are more risks of "fake tourists" from China who could want to overstay their visas.

1 million Chines tourists sounds about right - see groups of them all over Tokyo.

Rodney: the figure given is for the unaccompanied tourist visa. The rest came in group tourist visas with tour guides.

"Of the Chinese tourists who came to Japan on an individual basis, 85% visited Tokyo, with Hokkaido being the next most popular destination."

At least 10% of them are now "masaji" girls in the Yokosuka bar area. They're everywhere!! And damn annoying!

I think that the article is trying to point out that this a big step for Japan. What kind of bond to these Chinese turists have to pony up with? @Kureigu3 I think another 10% are in Roppongi hassling people on the street there!

    How many overstayed? None!!!

These are the wealthy chinese. The ones doing the massage and working in chinese restaurants are the illegals.

It's a new visa category and this article isn't saying whether the number is high or low, just that 4400 Chinese people (who can prove they have substantial wealth) have successfully received these visas.

Statistically Chinese tourists spend more money in Japan than any other major country including Korea, Taiwan, or the US. That's because a disproportionate number of Chinese tourists are millionaires. Please, get with the 21st century.

95% of Chinese are poor and they'll never visit Japan. Duh.

Massage girls don't get tourist visas, they get student visas. No relation between the two.

  • Yelnats at 12:48 PM JST - 9th October

I wonder how many of them will skip out on returning to Chna.
