The transmission of swine flu to humans will probably do to pork consumption what the emergence of AIDS did to human sexuality...........

It didn't change much back in 1976. Why would it now?

Hey Jose', you want to know how to get in the front of the lines anywhere in the world? See that pig over there?

When in doubt freak out, every time something like this comes along the whole world goes into a full on panic. Look this won't be anymore deadly than brid flu was and will merely end up wasting a ton of money and effort on things like Narita's temperature scanner. Get a grip people your more likely to be hit by a bus.

Now we're talking about some real important news rather than the stupid drunken pop star's naked romp through the park.

usaexpat, With bird flu, there was no human to human transmission, though the fear was the virus could mutate. You're right that people shouldn't overreact, but not to recognize a real danger when it occurs wouldn't be advisable either. I see nothing wrong with the temperature scanner, if it works. Also they already have the equipment in place, so there is not new investment except for staff.

This is scary stuff, indeed. Anyone who hasn't read up on the 1918-1919 pandemic should do so. There were stories of people literally dropping dead in the streets. And that was before commercial airlines, where an infected person could be on the other side of the world in hours. Better yet, instead of reading up on the 1918 pandemic, better read 'The Stand'. Captain Trips is here!

usaexpat, this flu has already been more deadly than bird flu. I have always thought that the risk from bird flu was ridiculously overstated and that cancelling trips to SE Asia because of it was just crazy. This however is something quite different- see how quickly it is jumping to different countries, including NZ, where I am from. Bird flu was never transmitted between humans whereas this flu is. so it is a completely different situation.

Make your choice folks. Colorado, or Vegas?

The J Government needs to do something about all these people going into public areas hacking, sneezing, and snotting all over the place. People being forced to go to work in public places while they still have a wet cough is not really smart. Same thing with students in school. They are so strict on attendance, that students are going to school sick, and spreading viruses. Really not smart at all. If the swine flu gets into Japan, it will spread like wildfire!

I am Mexican and I am keeping in touch with my relatives night and day by phone, emails, chat etc..so far so good, but Mexico has run out of masks, even if you have MONEY, you can not buy masks to cover your mouth and nose, I pray that nations around the world send masks to Mexico to control this horrible virus. Thank you!

  • nandakandamanda at 11:21 PM JST - 27th April

No mask? Hold a tissue or a paper kitchen towel to your nose and mouth. Tie a towel round your face. These are things I have done many times for allergies.

  • LoveUSA at 11:45 PM JST - 27th April

    mass hysteria again.

  • sharky1 at 06:55 PM JST - 28th April

    No masks???? Use a bandelero!

  • EurajReturns at 08:54 PM JST - 28th April

Even if you can say people are going a little overboard, this is better than countries undereacting. With the choice between inconvenience and global pandemic, I wouldn't choose the latter. One of my Mexican friends said she's been out of school because of this. No learnin for a little, but no sickness.

THE SWINE FLU is NOT transmitted by food including pork, it IS transmitted the same way a cold would be. Currently there is no cure, they say it may take up to 6 months or more to make it.
