“That’s a very important request that we received and it’s something that is going to take careful consideration by the IAEA,” Lyons told Japanese reporters. “That consideration is underway now.”

Now the IAEA has to put their money where their mouth is. With their Lives being on the line. I wonder how this will turn out.

I bet that team will be flown over First Class by TEPCO.

They already have an office in Tokyo, well I guess it would be a 30 minute flight to Fukushima

The pro nuke industry IAEA have been a major disappointment with the nuclear disaster.

With the visit over the reactor stress tests, the IAEA have already stated that it's up to the government to decide whether or not to restart nuclear power plants.

Well, at least I trust the UN a little (very little) more than TEPCO and the IAEA. At the very least, the UN could provide a lot better support for the victims up in Tohoku.

Shouldn't this have been done on day one? First they don't want foreign help and now that they realised they are well over their head... Better late than nothing I guess.

Notice how the IAEA has been cleverly manipulated away from Fukushima to overseeing stress tests and other inspections other nuclear plants for the past several months?

The main reason why the Japanese government delayed in requesting assistance for Fukushima is the fact that now that most evidence has been conveniently "lost or destroyed", there would be little the international body could investigate for wrongdoings and malpractices, and just help.

Much like how they haven't kept notes from meetings. Pathetic! God I am sick of writing that but it is true. Pathetic. They care more about saving face than they do about their people.

They want the wolves to monitor the foxes? They just want political cover for their reprehensible policies.

As the government has lost all credibility with the public regarding nuclear power, they have been forced into this situation. I guarantee that if they could have figured out another way to get the public's confidence back up to the point where they could re-start some reactors, they would have done THAT instead of asking for a permanent U.N. presence.

What I'm confused about is the location: the reactors in Fukushima aren't getting started again - ever. Sure, reactors 5 and 6 were not damaged in the disaster, but the people in Fukushima will never let them be re-started no matter WHO says it's safe. If you're going to base a U.N. post somewhere, do it near reactors that have a chance of restarting.
