Japan sends 20,000 sets of protective clothing to Africa for Ebola fight

An Air Self-Defense Force plane left Japan on Saturday to deliver 20,000 sets of protective clothing to doctors fighting the Ebola epidemic in Africa.

The plane left Komaki Air Base in Aichi Prefecture for Ghana. From there, the United Nations staff will take the gear to medical personnel in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea, NTV reported.

The gear is part of Japan's pledge of $40 million to help combat the Ebola outbreak.

A Japanese company has already donated 10,000 high-tech face masks to several Ebola-hit African nations.

The outbreak has left more than 6,000 dead worldwide since December last year, nearly all in Sierra Leone and neighboring Guinea and Liberia.

A day late and a dollar short as they say. Where was this support months ago?

Why not send a hospital ship and doctors/nurses like many other countries? Money and a face mask is just not good enough.

Lets hope it doesn't include very special Japanese face masks so they can "gaman" their way through the illness

@Sherman: write the name and country that manufacture hospital ship. Hitachi and Mitsubishi do not so not in Japan. Also not in China.

@dragon: Have you been in a Japanese hospital to use Japanese face mask? Expandable with special erastic ear covers. They don;t have men only or women only. Same size that fit to anyone's face. Sumo wrestlers and children. You can buy in Pharma stores. Try. But this ones Japan send are medical use mask with special chemical to protect Ebola. I read in some medical journal article and stuck in mind because the name of maker is a subsidiary of Fuji Film,

The face masks sold in pharmacies have not been shown to prevent the transmission of other communicable illnesses when used as they usually are here, much less Ebola

Are you good in arithmetic? How much masks and protecting clothes might cost?

Have you been following the news at all?

"Japan has pledged $40m and disbursed a total of $4.17m to the WHO, the WFP and UN agencies fighting the outbreak." (as of Oct. 22)
