Do people still really believe once you get rid of those perky Americans that the old bases on Okinawa will become sprawling nature preserves and that this whole military presence on Okinawa problem is largely because of Washington?

@harvey Pekar,

Well, the thing is that Okinawa is too strategic NOT to have military bases on. It is just too important too Japan. That being said, the amount of bases will greatly reduce once the American presence is removed, and I think that's most important to the residents of Okinawa prefecture -- getting the Americans out.

On-topic,

About time, honestly. Last week there was a Chinese research vessel that just parked off of Okinawa for several hours. It ignored the Japanese coast guard's demands to depart the area and it wasn't the first time this happened.

What with Russia flying bombers close to Japan as well now, this is a wise move. Japan needs to improve its surveillance and defensive capabilities. Being an island nation, it is harder to cover all possible approaches, since an invasion force could come from anywhere. Improving surveillance woud at the very least provide an early warning in that scenario.

No one wants to invade Japan. it has very few assets that are worth a war over. The only reason it happened before was because of Japans expansionism. Which appears to be happening again under Abe again , so every one will be watching out for themselves in case this proves right. A sad thing to ever happen again as the loss of innocent lives are caused by the greed of one persons plans to expand their borders
