Japan to award 1st Hideyo Noguchi prizes to British, Kenyan doctors

TOKYO —

Japan’s Cabinet Office said Wednesday it will award its first Hideyo Noguchi Africa prizes to two doctors from Britain and Kenya to honor their achievements in the field of medical research and care in Africa.

The prizes will be awarded to Brian Greenwood, 69, from Britain, who has contributed to the creation of effective strategies to control malaria, still a major killer in Africa, and Miriam Were, 67, from Kenya, who has dedicated her life to establishing community-based approaches to improving the health of people on the continent. The winners in the fields of medical research and medical services will receive 100 million yen each. The prize money is mainly provided by the Japanese government with additional donations from Japan and abroad, according to the Cabinet Office.
