    Scarves! The Silent Killer.

The translation of this story/article is all jacked up. As electric2004 pointed out, the original Japanese story reports that the woman was on her way home after an evening of drinking. Also, she was found unconscious at the top of the escalator at approximately 9:30PM, not AM.

These escalator contraptions should come with some sort of warning or directions on use. How else are we supposed to know about the dangers. Perhaps an announcement can be made to all passengers when embarking and disembarking these devices.

Thank, USNin. A great eye for the details, as usual.

They have that at some places, but I think it's more for the benefit of the blind, not the stupid.

There is a U.S. expression that "beauty knows no pain". Guess this is the exception to the rule, since wearing a scarf here is required to be fashonable from October through March, regardless of the actual weather. In any case, a senseless and apparently avoidable accident, since she was "falling down drunk" at the time. This country has a major drinking problem, which everyone just seems to want to ignore.

Scarfs are pointless. They can only kill you. They can never do good.

  • electric2004 at 12:08 PM JST - 9th March

Same risk with scarfs when riding a bicycle or a motorbike. And beware of capes (as was told by the Incredibles).

Thank you moderator. It seems we have too many 'English teachers' on this blog debating each other on word usage instead of focusing on the topic. Lets all stick to the subject!

debating inaccuracies in the actual events is quite a different kettle of fish don't you think? I'd like to know if she was drunk at 9am or 9pm.

Agreed. Any synonym will do. Geesh. Nitpickers.

Anyway, with any fate this female will get up and own a total salvage in two shakes of a lamb's tail. I would not grip my air though. The destitute dame could be fixedly in a legume condition.

likeitis you are, 'ow you say...yapping up the wrong forest, no?

Drunk or not, people are likely to wear scarves, or any other loose fitting clothing for that matter. Its up to the escalator manufacturer to factor this into their design. If the strangled/choked/wind induction impeded woman regains conciousness I see a big payment coming up.

Actually, I think its up to scarf wearers to use the stairs.

  • likeitis at 09:44 AM JST - 10th March

    She was wearing a muffler.

I think they are bowing to American English? But this is a point American English should change. The difference between a scarf and a muffler is great enough to warrant the separation of terms.
