Total waste of money. You could throw 120 trillion dollars at "stabilizing" that area for all I care and it would not work.

The best thing they can do to stabilize the region is to stop buying oil from there.

It seems that the Japanese government is trying to find every way possible to spend money on anything but helping out the earthquake victims/areas. It doesn't matter how much money they give them, you can't stabilize religious ideologies with money. Quit all funding to these countries and we'll see how long they last without the aid from the countries they despise so much.

The best thing they can do to stabilize the region is to stop mining uranium there.

There is no uranium mined in Algeria or any other north-african country. While there are deposits, they have yet to be mined due to high costs compared to other mines.

Only oil is mined and exported to Japan from north african countries.

Both Niger and Mali are North African countries and both mine uranium.

The Algerian plant which was attacked by terrorists who killed Japanese nationalists and others is a gas plant and not an oil plant.

All active Uranium mines are in subsaharan africa, below the Sahel belt region that this article is about. Only commodities Japan needs that are impacted by this article are fossil fuels.

Niger has two uranium mines, both owned by a French multi-national consortium (COGEMA) that receives all of Niger's ore for processing. With annual yellowcake production around 2,900 tons, Niger has the third-highest uranium production in the world behind Canada and Australia. Almost all of this yellowcake is exported to France, Japan, and Spain (the countries that make up the COGEMA consortium).

The same terrorists which attacked the Algerian gas plant are active across Mali and Niger.
