Let's hope it inspires the growing of rice there.

Mutually beneficial, Japan to get rid of old and disliked imported rice stocks and good relief for recipient countries. However, 20K tons seems too small a quantity for Africa.

Japan’s stockpile includes 1.52 million tons of imported rice from the U.S., Thailand and Vietnam in the compulsory “minimum access” annual purchase under the 1993 WTO agreement. The rest of the stockpile is domestic rice.

finally a chance to get rid of that stuff... are they sending the neat rice cookers too??? or at least some teams to demonstrate how to cook Japanese rice.

    /sarcasm off

With all that rice, why do we pay 3000 yen for 10kg of rice. It's crazy.

It makes sense. All that imported rice just sitting there was starting to cost the J-govt a fortune in storage. Giving away some of that nasty foreign rice will actually save them money. It wasn't that long ago they were developing ways to use the stuff to make plastics.

Noborito, they stockpile all the foreign rice so they can sell the domestic stuff at higher prices, thus guaranteeing money in the pockets of farmers and votes at election time.

The rice is kept in warehouses under a government program to maintain high domestic prices to protect Japanese rice growers.

so the rice prices are rising and a lot of people face real harship in the world and Japan gets re-elected to the UN Human Rights council. Way to go the old farts!
