Disillusioned at 08:12 AM JST - 19th October
How? The wombats are gonna let more people into the country for longer periods, thus giving them more time to set up a network for their illegal stay. More Japa-logic. They should be making it more difficult for them to get visas and scrutinize their stay in Japan.

I think that might be the whole idea, disillusioned. Not suggesting that Chinese people are more inclined to become illegal immigrants than any other nationality, but Japan has a severe labour shortage and even countries like the USA benefit from illegal Mexican labour.

Yes! Bad idea!

are some foreigners more entitled to come to Japan than others?! besides, Japan is already behind other countries in the race to get a bigger share of the fast-growing Chinese tourism gold pot. While the % of wealthy Chinese is relative small, the absolute number is staggering.

Sure Japan has a Labor shortage of "Unskilled" workers, Not the kind of people that make $350,000 a year. Or even if they relax that to say, 5 million yen ($50,000), which is still, very very good money in China, these people aren't fry cooks and dishwashers (which is the kind of labor needed in Japan)
If you want to see for yourself, just take a trip down to "Hello-Work" any day of the week, and if you wander over to the "外国人" section, you will notice that probably 50% of those foreigners there, just happen to be Chinese, larger than any other ethnic group. And believe me, these people are not day laborers, these are skilled people, some with master's and PH.D's, and "Hello-Work" is not required to check their visa.
And what did they say a couple weeks ago, Japan now has the highest ever unemployment on record....

Require a $25,000 deposit to be picked up upon going home.

I would like to see other countries apply that to Japanese tourists. Anyone who earns less than 3.5 million yen a year doesn't qualify to enter any other countries. Now let's see, who in Japan might earn under 300,000 yen a month? Your average young OL living at home, all those freeters, not to mention housewives who aren't earning their own income, and of course all university and school students would all be stuck here until they have a stable job. Then the boss will only let them go away for max eight days in a row. Give 'em a dose of their own medicine and watch for howls of indignation.

All I know is the number of foreigners from Asia is HUGE at the Shinagawa Foreigners Office, on the 6th floor, those that have overstayed their visas. Over 300 per day. I know because once I overstayed my visa by overlooking the "routine" 3-year period and had to spend several hours of 2 different days there. What do you think this will do to that number in the future?

As usual on this site, some people are falling over themselves to bash Japan for things that pretty much every country does.
David35, YES some foreigners are more entitled to come to Japan than others. This is almost certainly true of your country too, wherever you are from. Most first world countries allow tourist from other first world countries, but have restrictions on visitors from developing countries. The logic for this is extremely simple. It's arguably unfair and you could make a case for it being counter-productive, but it's a fact of life around the world. Petition your own government for freedom of foreign tourism first before you have a go at Japan.
Mindover matter - it's $35,000 a year, not $350,000.
Asthecrow_flies - see above. Your country also applies different entry standards to tourists from different countries.
No doubt I'll now find out that you're all from Burkino Faso and welcome visitors from everywhere.
