Probably not a bad idea, but before working on getting the embassy staff out and closing it down, they should be pressuring anyone there working for big companies to get out. The Japanese in Algeria were not sought out targets, they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hopefully the other 14 nationals comply.

Closing the embassy might be a bit too much but you can never know. Never a bad thing to be too cautious. Hope those who come back to Japan won't be tagged as "flyjin" nor dismissed from their job!

Who needs an embassy in Mali anyway?

Hidingout, exactly, Mali?? It should not even have a Japanese embassy when so many other good African countries DESERVE a Japanese embassy!

And needlessly become a terrorist target? No thank you!
Thankfully Japan can't be an aggressor and even if it were allowed too its wise to have a similar stance as the Scandinavian countries.

How about closing it period? Nine staff for Mali? A waste of taxes or what?!

Yes just like the Scandinavian countries who remain neutral in these type of conflicts. In you're comment you said the JSDF should go in and kick some 'ass'. That would be a military conflict. The Norwegian workers killed weren't part of a military conflict and in fact it was France who drew the attention of these terrorists NOT Norway.
With regards to those bases I think Japan should be more concerned about its neighbours than the Middle East.
