so, this a story about a smelly guy who has no reason to stay in an airport?

it's not the embassy I'll call but an asylum...

Another sign the apocalypse is imminent:

"Tourists stop to pose with him for photographs or get an autograph."

A true idiot. And yes the movie is his motivation. He wants celebrity status in japan for being just like some movie. Some people need to do things to make themselves more important. This idiot just wanted to be another Tom Hanks.

Isn't this called trespassing? His story was on TV this morning and someone made the comment "This is embarassing. Why isn't the Japanese embassy doing anything to get him out of Mexico?". I have the feeling many Japanese are responding this way.

how shameful it is! he is bringing Japan's name for God sake!!! i can't judge him but foul smell??? OMG, the embassy must make an effort or counselling with this man.He denied that the movie "The Terminal wasn't his inspiration but see he knew that movie in the first place and it seems that he is kinda defensive in his statement!

Welcome to Mexico! I am Mexican and I can just bet, the people who are giving him food donations etc..are probably trying to figure out why this wacky Japanese would stay at the terminal without taking a bath or a shower for months! He must smell like a bouquet of fresh roses! Imagine what regular Japanese going to Mexico on business and seeing thise wierdo ruin the Japanese hard working image that most Mexicans have? I would like to know if this nut case has any kind of family. Maybe his family is happy just to have him far away?

"He smells like he hasn't had a shower in months."

This is sad. I don't have much in the way of material things, but if I go more than a day or so without a shower, even in winter, I feel grungy.

"Strangers often buy him pastries or hamburgers"

These people are Nohara's enablers. Without them, he'd starve and he'd be forced to leave.

So if I stop showering and laze around doing nothing at Narita will people give me free food? Can't they take this village idiot and deport him straight to a nice jail cell? Or asylum?

A lot of people seem baffled as to why he hasn't been forced to leave, but the articles seems pretty clear about it:

"The embassy can’t force him to leave, and since Nohara’s visa is valid all Mexican officials can do it wait for it to expire in early March."

I agree with bushlover: This is probably a calculated and desperate cry for attention. But he's not harming anyone or himself, so I don't see the point in being outraged. While what he's doing certanly qualifies as silly, its obviously not malicious, so why get worked up over it, prticularly when today's news cycle is filled with stories about shootings, stabbings extortions, imbezlement, and wrongful arrests?

Mexican officials are doing the reasonable thing in waiting for his currently valid tourist visa to run its course.
