I have to say I find this funny and I'm an American! Chinese disapproval not needed.

What would China say

I'm sure the Japanese soldiers must have seen the humour in the situation as well.
I think we should start a tradition of allowing the losers of war to reinact their victory 70+ years later. It would be cathartic.

Just for a bit of historical context, Japan was an "ally" in WW1.
Present tense too. Better on "our" side than not.

I don't know if 70 years is enough for the sting to go away for the survivors of Pearl Harbor and their families so I might be out of my depth here but...why did the choose Hawaii? I mean, there are tons of other islands in the Pacific. Scratch that -- there are tons of islands in Japan. It's a friggin archipelago!

RIMPAC is always conducted in Hawaii every other year and the JMSDF participates in it every time. There's absolutely nothing controversial about this amphibious training. Amphibious assault operations is one mission that's vital to a country comprised so much of outlying islands and the JSDF has been woefully deficient in this critical capability. The JSDF does conduct amphibious assault training domestically, but there's obviously more value to doing it in tandem with other forces who are more experienced than they are. It's no surprise that it would be exercised by them in the largest multilateral maritime training event in the Pacific theater and the location is incidental.

Yes sheriff I think you are out if your depth here. "Overcoming the legacy of the attack, the Japanese who bombed Pearl Harbor and the Americans who survived the attack are coming together during a series of Pearl Harbor anniversary observations in Hawaii." http://www.chron.com/news/nation-world/article/U-S-Japanese-veterans-meet-in-peace-at-Pearl-1638117.php

Major base there, ease of access, supply and medical/other assistance if required. (I'm sure there's good "field" medical care available if necessary, but I'd guess you can add quick medevac to hospitals too)
Especially with the people who may be fighting alongside them.

Better on "our" side than not.
Better for you, not for them.

It's funny. Japan bombed Hawaii. Now they are storming the beaches of Hawaii with Americans. Well, either you are with us or against us. Heh Heh...
