That much-touted modesty will undoubtedly ensure that the media here will downplay the achievements of Mr Omura while Mr Tu and Mr Campbell will be spotlighted for their contributions.

@Stuart hayward

Have you heard of something called sarcasm ?

"British professor wins Nobel Prize for medicine “

“Three scientists who discovered the brain's "GPS system" have been awarded the Nobel Prize for physiology or medicine”

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/11143190/British-professor-wins-Nobel-Prize-for-medicine.html

Perhaps Moonraker's country is unique in that they stress out the achievement of foreigners first and foremost???

STOCKHOLM — Three scientists from Ireland, Japan and China won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday

On that sarcasm streak, good to see we're observing strict alphabetical country order.

Oh, I see, it's reverse population/land mass/GDP order!

Lest anyone get a complex, eh.

Great Job... Japan now has 23 Nobel Laureates. not that many considering the size of Japan population and economy.

The US & UK have about 460 between them. Canada, Switzerland, France Germany, Sweden, Russia, all have as many or more.

Lest anyone get a complex, eh.

By why has Campbell's age not been revealed, eh? Inquiring minds demand to know.

@Moonraker et al.: Tu Youyou is a woman, so Ms, not Mr.

My humble apologies to Ms Yu. Thanks for letting me know, Maria.

Yes, Peeping Tom, you are right that other countries might well trumpet their achievements but the widespread belief and ideology here in Japan is that Japan is modest. This was the point you missed.

The Nobel Prize (for medicine and other disciplines) is not an international competition (despite what the media thinks). Rather, it is the crowning achievement of scientists (and others) who have advanced the human condition through innovative ideas, long hours of research and true academic insight. As with previous Laureates, these three individuals (and those to be announced in coming days for other disciplines) should be praised for their endeavors and their subsequent success.

Well done to all.

Japanese have done well at capturing Nobel prizes in recent years. It usually takes several decades before achievements are recognised. As the education ministry has been cutting university budgets for many years, resulting in Japan's universities plunging in global rankings, I expect to see fewer Japanese Nobel prize winners in the future. Of course, the clowns running the education ministry today will all have retired by then, but the responsibility lies with them nevertheless.

Great stuff! The Sciences Nobel Prizes are definitely the most prestigious

Well, the spokespeople, the media, the people themselves ... you know ... those who make the idealised entity living and believe the ideology. But, hey, I know where this is going. We will get scrubbed by the mods for being off topic, so maybe this is a subject for another day.

This was on the TV all morning. The Welsh scientist got a very brief mention and the Chinese scientist was not even mentioned at all. I guess these wounds run deep on both sides??

Herbal Medicine. Nice...so as we still kill the planet and the possibilities of finding more classes of drugs, people continue to die. Survival of the fittest is actually necessary.

The pre WW2 awards were very much biased opting for white spremacy seeing that they were all given to European ancesetry. The only exeptance were the ones given to Indians but they were all students and most were doing research in Europe.
