The timing of this test does seem suspicious. If I were a resident of Taiji who ate dolphins I'm not sure I could trust the staff performing the tests to give accurate results (surely they'd like to tell everyone they don't suffer from mercury poisoning)

Lets wait and see the results but I wouldn`t mind betting everyone gets a clean bill of health and that THAT is announced in the full media spotlight - regardless of what might actually be the case.

You will only see the good results. Any test results showing high levels of mercury will be lost in translation. If they are so confident about there being no harmful levels of mercury or other toxins accumulated in the locals or in the the dolphin meat why don't they let an international company conduct the tests? I'm sure many countries would love to get involved in peeling the lid off Taiji.

Why don't they test the dolphin meat on sale in the shops?

If it is mercury, then "great", that's just mother nature telling them don't mess with these intelligent creatures. I hope the same poison or more harmful toxins are implanted in the whales too.
