I am confused, if she was camping with a boyfriend, what became of him?

This should be in the world news section, if at all. Or does national mean the person, and not the news?
Moderator: Any news from overseas to do with Japan or Japanese is put in the National section.

Thinking you're finally saved from freezing to death in the mountains, only to die like this. Can't think of many worse ways to die.
And yeah, what happened with the boyfriend?

Poor things. It isn't so common for Japanese to go overseas for tertiary study, so she must have been pretty clever to be doing postgrad abroad... And killed by bad luck instead of some madman or driving accident... What a pity.

I am guessing it's the boyfriend who notified the authorities that the girl was lost in the mountains.

They have a helicopter but it crashed. I wonder why.

The helicopter couldn't get enough vertical lift in the thin mountain air amid poor weather conditions.

Pilot should have stayed nice and warm till sunup, then went and picked up the idiot hiker.

Tragic event, but it would be more tragic if folks didn't learn from this:
1) Carry one of those super cheap, very loud whistles when hiking in the wilds. 2) Stay within shouting range of your partner. 3) Don't risk a helicopter in bad weather--wait it out if possible.
