By 2050, Japan’s centenarian population is expected to reach nearly 1 million

I hope they do not let them drive as they do in Florida. Florida's state anthem is the Siren. Might be wise to adopt that here too if they let them drive.

I hope the nenkin system gets fixed... otherwise people are going to have to work until they're 80.

I think I've driven behind all of them in the past month

Enh... This news piece is merely confirms what has long been true. Not only are populations getting older, but they're staying healthier as they do so. People can be healthy enough to work 'til 80. I certainly plan to.

I see no practical reason in forcing people to retire at an archaic benchmark of 60-65, particularly when the current "elderly" population in industrialized nations is more than willing and able to work, and work well.

This would make an epic Logan's Run.

And this is a good thing? Who is going to pay for all these people? Instead of bending over backwards to cater for these oldies (who have had a pretty good run), the government should think about how it is going to increase birth rates in order that the country can just keep its head afloat.

Kudos to the diet they used to enjoy in Japan to enable all these people to not die until 100 or more. But many of these poor old buggers - especially the women - I see, walk around at 90 degree angles, staring at the ground. It makes me sad to see them, and there are gonna be more and more of them.

As healthcare science improves, our lives will be extended. There are some jobs' retirement ages I do NOT want to see extended without a COMPLETE physical and mental work-up... a Commercial Airline Pilot, for one.

1 million 100 year olds? Lets put them all in Shikoku. I think half of them are there now.

Old folks, Shikoku. Young, Hokkaido. Middle aged cogers Honshu. What is left over can go to Kyushu.

Hats off to the Japanese diet, you should eat it whether in Japan or not. Especially 'goya', manna from heaven.......... oh yeah, and tofu.... crap outside Japan, but otherwise delicious. I wanna be 100 too...

too many old farts, birthrate thats slowed to a crawl...not a recipe for long-term success

But many of these poor old buggers - especially the women - walk around at 90 degree angles . . . and there are gonna be more and more of them.

Unlikely. Those women's advance osteoporosis is the result of outdated farming techniques combined with a diet low in calcium, both aspects of the past that are all but disappearing in a population that doesn't farm as much as it used to, and, as you already pointed out, enjoys a better diet.
