According to Japanese version of Yomiuri, the increase was mostly due to increases in the newly naturalized Japanese citizens as well as chuzaiin and other overseas Japanese coming back to Japan (41,826). The rate of natural increase (births minus deaths) was minus 29,119, the largest decrease ever. More people are dying, indeed.

that is good to know that the population of Japan is increasing.

Let's simply enjoy sex and we shall multiply naturally.

  • DeepAir65 at 02:53 PM JST - 1st August

How ironic - there is another story on here today talking about Japanese life expectancy going up...

  • LIBERTAS at 03:49 PM JST - 1st August

"The were told to "Go forth and multiply!" And they did!" I offered this as a sarcastic example of what the people are told by their ruling class here every day, not a biological imperative!

Yet another headline with gaping holes in the story and no explanation of the reasons why. Having read the news story in full in the Yomiuri newspaper, this headline should in fact read 'Newly accepted Japanese citizens and emigration returnees falsify Japan's latest population figures'.

that is good to know that the population of Japan is increasing.

    And why is that?

  • ThonTaddeo at 09:19 PM JST - 1st August

That's an amazing numerical coincidence -- the increase was as close as you can possibly come to being exactly 0.01% of the new total.

Has there ever been a year-on-year population change of such a small magnitude? All those people coming and all those people going, with the totals almost exactly balancing? If an election were this close, there would be a recount and the government would be gridlocked for months.

yes I admit it... we had another baby and doubled the local population...

  • usaexpat at 11:32 PM JST - 1st August

buggerlugs, good one you must be enjoying the country life. Whether through immigration or overseas Japanese returning or births this is good news. These numbers mean that Japan's population is relatively stable.

Hey, maybe Japan can halt the population decline crisis.

When i was in Japan, here was little or no support for moms who wanteed to get back into the workplace.

Maybe spend some of the money spent on concreting the money on helping child care.

Hope it was good population growth, and not angry population growth. Of course, some guys would take a pity population growth.

  • GW at 10:41 AM JST - 2nd August

as others have pointed out some of the missing info, the increase was mostly just Japanese returning to Jpn, foreigners arent included in the counts according to my DY & when looking at births vs deaths, the later is still higher, so the population is still decreasing, ok you can all move on now, nothing more to see
