The momentum increases. Cue stomach ulcer for Dear Leader.
Yubaru
Momentum may increase but Abe is deaf. This Saturday's anniversary will show the world what Abe is, man or mouse!
(I for one pick mouse...)

Someone should sit this guy down for a good chat with that LDP politician who recently said (something along the lines of) young people these days are selfish for not wanting to go off to war.
nakanoguy01
i think for every one of these guys, there are 3 who feel the opposite. they are still pi**ed about losing the war and are proud to have served the empero by invading china, korea and other countries in asia. it's those guys who have the LDPs ear.

Other Japanese citizens also fighting for peace like Mr. Harada include Japanese citizens given the life-threatening task of dismantling Japan's chemical weapons facilities on Okunoshima Island soon after the war. Their plight has long been ignored.

I reckon that the UN should change the rules of war to allow the targeting killing of government officials during wartime. I think with that threat, most politicians would reconsider the costs of war. The entire reason nationalists and right-wingers like in the J Gov atm exist, is because they will never ever be the ones holding a gun and entering battle themselves.
These right wing morons don't have the slightest hint of morality of human compassion for others. I suspect half the reason they're pushing so hard for a more militaristic Japan is because they want to see a war for the fun of it in their lifetimes and they are getting older and older.

Guys against the war obviously exist. Got any evidence that the guys you describe do?

Mr Abe would do well to heed the wise counsel of these gentlemen. They know something about war, which he obviously doesn't

Nagasaki mayor Tomihisa Taue appeared to implicitly criticise the bills in a speech at the ceremony. "Worries and anxieties are now spreading among us that this pledge made 70 years ago and the principle for peace in the Japanese constitution may be now undermined," he said to loud applause.

Abe and Kishi, Abe's grandfatether are the people who don't have to fight the combat when the war happens - the privileged class who talk about the war in the comfort of their high office. Ordinary guys who have to actually fight have a very different experience. It's very important for these people to speak up to counter politicians' patriotic yet vacuous preaching about foreign threats.

What if drinking filthy water with insects and maggots in it, is what gave him longevity? Of course you need the right DNA, too. Politicians do not mind wars that others fight.

Tjis guy is right. We should get more Air defenses and Drones

"Now just days from his 99th birthday, he and other men who fought Japan’s hopeless Pacific War worry that a country in the throes of re-invigorating its military has forgotten the true terror of conflict."
Of course they have! The same people who never had to fight or die are setting it up so yet again others will have to go and fight and die in their place. THEY never had to realize the terrors of fighting -- they sit behind desks and are the ones that think it's video games and fun; they are the ones who thought, as you did Harada, that you are superior because your technique is better, and get a thrill from it. They, sadly, don't have the afterthoughts that have driven you to become a better person; the regret, the realization that they too may have families and loved ones and that you took that away from them.
Strangerland: "Got any evidence that the guys you describe do?"
Do you live in a hole? There are MANY Japanese politicians who have flat out said they want war with China and to see Japan win, with Ishihara in fact stating "That is my only regret... that we have not". I have personally met a few nutbags who have said the world would be a better place if Japan had won the war, and wish Japan had it's suicide bomber mentality and 'honor' like back then, etc. There are MANY who don't bat an eye when saying, "If we have war with China, so be it!" They are always bitter old men, but there is still a HUGE level of ignorance as to what led to the war and Japan's devastation in the general public that can easily allow for it to happen again (and for them again to wonder why Japan is the victim).

Surviving WWII soliders are all politicians now? That's news to me.
Or maybe you lost the track of who we were talking about in the conversation. I think that makes more sense.
darnname
I can't wait to hear some specifics about this "HUGE level of ignorance..."

Strangerland: Sorry, amigo, as usual it's you who has lost track and cannot admit he is wrong. The poster you were responding to, Nakanoguy, I believe, said that he believes for every one of these guys (ie. the WWII former soldier, not a politician), there are three who think the opposite and are angry Japan lost the war.
I extended that to include current politicians, and people I have met (which, as usual, you cherry-picked out and said I meant all politicians), and asked you if you live in a hole when you made the somewhat nonsensical question: ""Got any evidence that the guys you describe do?"
So, sorry, Strangerland, but if you think people who think that way do not exist, including some former soldiers (they would hardly be paraded about during peace rallies, now would they?), you do indeed live in a hole in the ground.
nakanoguy01
yes, they are the ones in the black vans driving around all the time. or you haven't noticed them because you're too busy being illogical?

No bickering please.

nakanoguy01:
Fortunately for our ear drums, they are still a tiny minority.

Which, wasn't what who were talking about.
I didn't say they don't exist, I asked for some evidence that they do. I have no doubt there are a few, but 3 in 4 as claimed? That seems pretty unlikely to me.

The war is over...the world is different now. I'm not saying Japan needs an offensive military but there are real threats in China and others (ISIS/ISIL for example) that did not exist between the years 1945-2000. "Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum." (To preserve the peace, prepare for war.)
Patrick Kimura-Macke
HUGE level of ignorance: evidence: Out of over 100 Japanese people I know and have asked only one had heard of Nippon Kaigi. Over 250 Diet members (mostly LDP) are members including Mr Abe, several Shinto priests etc. Nippon Kaigi denies the Nanking Massacre and Comfort Women, wants the Tenno officially restored to deity status, constitution scrapped, Shintoism as official religion etc., etc.....
