Must be Nice takes most hard working, law abiding, non traitors at least 5 years. By the way whats he doing for a living?, whats his contribution to the tax, and health care system.
I know quite a few Americans would like to see him get Japanese citizenship and abandon his US one. But come on the guy's pretty old.
Let him go on in peace.
Retired from what, skipping out. So who pays his bills. Does a DD include retirement benefits?. He sure hasnt paid any SS in at least two countries I know of. Dont tell me he gets retirement benefits from NK.
Why should my tax money be spent to care for him. His wife should be goverment supported but why should he get anything.
His wife is probably getting money from the government, enough money to support 'a family' and that - plus his book sales and other promotions from the Niigata area - is what is probably supporting him.
That said, how many other nearly 70-year-old unemployed foreign nationals have been granted a permanent residence visa by the Japanese government?
She isn't, she was abducted. Mr. Jenkins, however, is somebody who deserted the military because he didn't want to go to Vietnam. Movie archives also imply that he was rather cooperative with North Korea.
I understand Mrs Jenkins has an income from her job as a nurse in an old people's home. That, and the small grant I think she gets from the government, is probably enough to keep her and her husband in luxury compared to their life in NK.
Giving Jenkins PR will save the visa people having to process him every three years. We all know he isn't going anywhere, so it seems the sensible thing to do.
Actually, Mr. Jenkins earns 4.8 million yen a year working 6-7 hours a day, 6 days a week at a museum gift-shop on Sado Island. He helps sell senbei and a portion of the profits go to the abductees fund. One can assume he is taxed, health insurance etc etc deducted. Give the chap a break!
Yeah, I still remember this guy's name - a man of disgrace to his home country that cost his honor due to his wrong choice in the wartime. U.S. government is not interested in bringing him to justice, because he's no threat to US National Security anymore. He's just a has-been.

What's the point in keeping his updates, anyway?

Yes, he deserted. He has apologised. After 40 years in NK surely he has paid his dues.
