At first glance, I thought this might be a refreshing tatse of accountability. Then I read it more closely:
Not dismiss. "to effectively dismiss". What's the betting this will involve different wording on a meishi, and a replacement sinecure as a "consultant" on the same pay, sitting in the same office, doing precisely the same amount of sod all?

I think the above post is correct.

IvanCoughalot,
You took the words right from my keyboard. This story would be far more interesting if we didn't already know that there is no such thing as real termination for executives in these cases, particularly when it comes to semi-governmental corporate monoliths like JR. Do recall how NHK handled its in-house corruption with an official who embezzled millions of yen for personal use just a few years back. He ultimately ended up with a cushy, high-paying “consultant” job for NHK.

Bingo, Ivan. What's more, JR seems to feel this is letting them off the hook for what they caused.

Wonder why the police arent inviolved? Surely you have the failure of a goverment official and two guys attempting to avoid prosecution by subverting the process? These are crimes in anyones book.

I've seen more unicorns and space aliens than Japanese "publio outcry" in my life.

Hopefully they got fat retirement bonuses.

Decisions made by these and other JR executives about train timetables and safety equipement ultimately led to the tragic accident. The people concerned then demonstrated their lack of remorse by interfering in the investigation. They should be transferred to new jobs in a prison laundry, and they should stay there till the people killed in that accident stop being dead.
